95% of fruit like tomatoes that we eat and 65% of all cut flowers sold in the UK are grown in hydroponic systems.This is because commercial growers love the high yield (say 300% more than usual) and the healthy vigorous growth and resistance to disease.
Hydroponics works by growing the plant in no soil. This enables the roots to get any nutrients they need instantly from the solution.The solution contains a formulated mixture of 14 nutrients so every plant can get just what they require. The water is circulated by a pump in an extremely thin layer so that the plants roots are not waterlogged and can breath.
What is hydro?
Instead of soil plants are grown in an inert medium such as rockwool or pebbles and a water and nutrient solution provides the plants with all the nutrients they need.
Plants grown in hydro systems develop strong healthy roots, have easy access to oxygen, water and nutrient, and overfeeding and underfeeding is prevented.
Plants started in compost can be transplanted to hydro systems.
Which hydro?
Our hydro systems are active, which means that the water and nutrient is automatically pumped from a reservoir, around the plant roots and (the really important bit) anything the plant does not take is drained back into the reservoir.
This way the plants never receive too much or too little water and nutrient.
NFT Hydro System
In a GS NFT the water is constantly pumped over the roots and back into the reservoir over and over again.
EBB & Flood Hydro System
In a GS Ebb & Flood at pre-set intervals the system floods water and nutrient from the reservoir over the roots and back into the reservoir over and over again.
